Scissor lifts are ideal for allowing your employees to work at different heights. They are quite safe to use, provided certain procedures are followed. Here is a quick guide to using scissor lifts safely.

Location

Firstly, you should ensure that the scissor lift is used in a safe location. One major hazard is electrocution, so you should make sure that the lift is not set up near power cables or transformers. If this is unavoidable, the operative should have proper training in how to avoid such dangers. You should also make sure that there is no other moving equipment around that could collide with the scissor lift and knock it over. Also, be aware of anything that could get in the way when moving the lift (this should not be done while it is extended in any case).

Surface

Once the location is chosen, make sure that the lift is on a stable surface. This should be flat and level and should be separated from other transport. If the scissor lift is to be used outside, you should ensure that the weather conditions are appropriate — avoid strong winds, for example. The manual should tell you which conditions are acceptable for the particular model of lift.

Guard rails

Before you extend the lift, check that the guard rails are in good condition. These are vital to prevent falls from the extended lift. Your operatives should be trained not to lean over or climb on the guard rails, which could overbalance the lift as well as increase the risk of a fall. Wherever possible they should always ensure that their bodies stay within the guard rails.

Weight

Finally, make sure that the scissor lift is not overloaded when it is in use. The manual will give you the maximum weight that can be raised on the lift, and you should never exceed this. If the top is too heavy the entire lift will become unstable. It could then easily overbalance just from a gust of wind or a small knock to the base. This will endanger people on the ground as well as those in the lift.

Provided you carry out proper assessments to minimise the risks, you can use a scissor lift with confidence. Make sure you follow the instructions in the manual and take any advice given by the manufacturer. Your operatives will then be able to work safely and effectively.
